You would have to first request an application and with this they may also ask you to send in other documents such as a cover letter, portfolio and test scores.

I think for international students the application process may differ from a student in same country so make sure to check.

I would make sure to search the school’s application process and for any concerns or questions you should definitely give the admissions office a call.

I am currently looking for a Co-op (required internship) and was hoping you might know a firm that might be accepting applications. I’d also love some advice on how to go about getting an internship and maybe some tips on how to get paid while I’m at it (: . Thanks!

———————

WHAT FIRMS ARE ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR INTERNSHIPS

I apologize I’m getting to you very late.

I would imagine your school would have a system or program that helps students find co-ops? Like Wentworth has basically a site where companies post job openings and such.

When looking for an internship, you really need to search around the area you are interested in. A good way to locate some firms would be by Google honestly. Literally just type in architect into the maps section and wah-la Google directs you to different firms in the area you searched in Google Maps. You could also start looking at websites that post job openings such as monster, intership, simplyhired etc.

I will be writing a post about applying and that sort of stuff about internships soon so I will elaborate more on this topic.

If i'm in second year of a bfa (fine arts) in drawing can i can a job in architecture even if i don't graduate with an architecture degree? I love architecture. I am studying as much as i can by myself about architecture. I'm getting familiar with autocad. Doing my own drawings. I really have a passion for architecture but i don't have the money for architecture school. Would it be possible for a drawing major to someday be an architect?

Would it be possible for a drawing major to someday be an architect?

I’m sure you wouldn’t be able to become an architect, but you could probably work at an architect firm. To be an architect you really need a degree and also pass couple of exams in order to get your license.

Everyone who works at an architect firm is not an architect; there are engineers, business and design majors.

I currently work at a construction company that has many backgrounds from architecture, engineering, construction management, business and so on.

So I’m sure that as a drawing major you could definitely get into a design company of some sort, but to actually be an architect you need an architectural education.

—————————

Developing a portfolio and entrance exams

Firstly here is a post about portfolios written by Mark from tipsforarchitectureschool about portolfios and what to generally put in them.

Entrance exams aren’t common from where I’m from so I’m not entirely sure on what things would be on the test.

Architecture schools differ in the sense that some are very art/design base while others are engineered base. So I would say it depends on the school you chose, some questions can pertain to more design things while others will be about math/science.

But don’t get me wrong, every school has both aspects in design and engineering, they just tend to lean more to one side is all.

So according to all my republican voting relatives it was actually my liberal minded college professors fault for me voting for Obama because of their liberal brainwashing that happens on campus everyday, the thing is though I can’t for the heck of me think how a 1’ exterior wall with corrugated siding with horizontal concealed substructure over a 1” air space anchored to an 3/4” OSB sheathing with rigid insulation on a 6” metal stud translates as Liberal brainwashing.

What? How confusing.

Architecture and politics don’t mix like that.

When we were first years (going into 4th year now). What do you think are some of the criteria that dictate a "strong" architecture program?

Well what’s important is what you gain from the program. Each program can affect a student differently.

For instance, you think your past program was stronger… maybe that system worked better for you.

I can’t really tell you the best criteria because it’s about how you learn and how your professors teach the material.

Some programs have notable professors that make the program “stronger”. Some programs have “better” courses or offer more different types of courses.

I would say that most, if not all, of the programs are taught with the same curriculum. Architecture education has been the same for years and it’s currently progressing with today’s technology. The underlying base layer of architecture education is still present in every program.

Holy shit. I discovered this book in my local design book store today. WHY DIDN’T I FIND OUT ABOUT THIS IN YEAR ONE! It has all the essential information you need when you’re still struggling to find your way around the maze of line weights, representation, drawing, tools, model making and materials (to name just a few).

Anyway, even at the end of third year, there’s still information in it that’s pretty useful.

(It’s bloody thick, by the way.)

Studio Craft and Technique: The Architecture Student’s Handbook by Miriam Delaney and Anne Gorman
